League Season Is Coming: Start With the Habits That Score

Updated: Aug 10

By John Filutze, USBC Gold Coach Candidate

League season is almost here, and a lot of bowlers are starting to think about averages, equipment, and getting back into rhythm.

All of that matters. But the bowlers who usually start strong aren’t the ones trying to rebuild everything before week one. They’re the ones who clean up the habits that show up every night: spares, routine, shot repetition, and paying attention to what the lane is telling them.

Make spares a priority

Strikes are great, but spares protect your score.

You don’t need to strike every frame to bowl well. But missed makeable spares will bring your score down fast, especially early in the season when timing and feel may not be fully sharp yet.

Before league starts, spend part of your practice time shooting single-pin spares, especially corner pins. Don’t treat spare shooting like something you do after strike practice. Treat it like one of the most important scoring skills in the game.

Watch your ball motion

Most bowlers wait too long to move.

The lane usually gives you clues before your score starts to suffer. A weak 10, a flat 10, a 2-pin, early hook, or a ball that stops driving through the pins can all be signs that something is changing.

Don’t just ask, “Did I hit my target?”

Ask, “What did the ball do?”

Better bowlers learn to watch the ball through the pins and use that information to make smarter decisions.

Keep your routine simple

Your pre-shot routine doesn’t need to be complicated. It just needs to help you slow down, pick a target, commit to the shot, and repeat the process.

When league pressure shows up, a routine gives you something steady to come back to. It keeps you from rushing, guessing, or overthinking.

Simple is good. Repeatable is better.

Start with a plan

You don’t have to be perfect in week one. But you should walk in with a plan.

Make spares matter. Watch ball motion. Keep your routine simple. Pay attention to the lane before the scorecard forces you to.

If you do those things, you’ll give yourself a much better chance to start the season with confidence.

Happy Bowling!!
